Positive Minds Group On-Location

The Positive Minds Group (PMG) was created by The Mentoring Center (TMC) in 1995 to serve the highly at-risk youth population. PMG utilizes a unique group-mentoring program, a proven curriculum, and dynamic facilitators to achieve the overall goal of changing the mentality in youth that gives rise to destruction behavior. In response to overwhelming requests for TMC to bring its services to schools and community centers, TMC created PMG On-Location, an abbreviated form of the program that is conducted in 9-18 week sessions at various locations around the Bay Area.

For the past year, TMC has operated PMG On-Location at Berkeley High School, working with a select group of students. The project seeks to improve self-esteem, self-awareness, build character, provide life skills, and overall change the negative mentality in the students and improve their attitude toward and about school. The project will therefore improve their behavior and their academic performance.

In the short time TMC has operated its program at Berkeley High, administrators, teaches, and parents have noticed an impact on the participating students. Improved attentiveness, better attitudes, and significantly reduced disciplinary actions have been cited among the initial impacts of the program.

The Mentoring Center and Berkley High are working to expand the Positive Minds Group On-Location program to include peer mentors, utilizing students who have gone through the program already, and include TMC case managers to conduct one-on-one sessions on campus as well as meet with teachers and parents of the participating youth. Additionally, TMC is working to bring PMG On-Location to more high schools and group homes in East Bay.
